Mark Twain: The Awful German Language/Die schreckliche deutsche Sprache
The Awful German Language is an essay by Mark Twain taken from his volume A Tramp Abroad, published in 1880. In the short text Twain describes the frustrations of learning German from the viewpoint of an English native speaker. Early on in the edenspiekermann_ text series the exception proves the rule: the text is only published in English, which, however, is clearly justified by the subject of the essay. While the main text is typeset in Erik Spiekermann’s Unit Slab, the few German lines are set in Wittenberg Fraktur – typographically expressing the bilingualism of the text. Several type specimen are included throughout the book.
