_design prescription providing a healing environment for immunosuppressed, acute leukaemia patients within a bone marrow transplant unit. my dissertation, written in my final year of university, focused on the ability of interior design to improve patient outcomes for adults suffering serious and/or terminal illness. my research focused on various design methodologies and ways in which designers can implement them to create environments within healthcare facilities to support healing and reduce stress for patients, visitors and staff. diagrammatic analysis, design development and adherence to australian healthcare facility guidelines enabled me to create a method for designing patient environments based on the psychological and physiological needs of the patient. collective analysis of my studies identified the pertinence of design flexibility to enable patients to influence their own environment to improve their sense of wellbeing and comfort. this is achieved through various mediums of distraction and sensory stimulation such as artistic installation and implementation of colour, patterns, light, aroma and sound.
