The frequent starts and landings at the world’s busiest airport are the inspiration and “kinetic raw material” for the art piece. The actual airplane movements are triggering animations on the suspended sculpture. The physical volume of the sculpture represents the “field of motion” in a dynamic shape. The volume of the sculpture consists of individually suspended round disks made from switchable LCD glass. On an average weekday afternoon 500 aircraft may be in the air flying towards Hartfield-Jackson, and an equal number may be in the air after departing it. Using flight tracking data, airfield responds to flights landing and taking off in real time. Read Less
