In response to a brief introducing me to semiotics; the science of signs, Jamie Rickett and I collaborated to create a set of five individual handmade books for a recent project entitled ‘Visual Signifiers’. Out of a list of 90 topics, we had to choose five and create ten signifiers (icons/symbols) for each one. Shown above, we chose to focus on Erase, Speed, Finality, Power and Multiple Dimensions. Within each book, we were also encouraged to describe the meaning for each signifier. By using a fold-out mechanism at the back of each book, the reader is therefore able to read each description next to the image whilst continuously turning each individual page. This device and the spreads of each book can be seen by following this link to my personal blog: http://barneystepney.tumblr.com/post/6618617554/visual-signifiers-in-response-to-a-brief Read Less
