Arthur Kill Boat Graveyard – Staten Island, NY
Obscuring the view towards New Jersey at the waters edge sit several dark, hulking bodies, half-buried in the coastal mud. These ship skeletons, with their slumping smoke stacks and jutting, rib-like girders, sit at the top of the city’s most impressive “boneyard,” or ship graveyard.
Vestige is an observation of the final resting place for dozens of rusting and rotting away abandoned and decommissioned century old steam vessels, warships, ferries, tugboats, dredging barges and fireboats. A diverse collection of weathered dilapidation transformed by salt water into intriguing and eerie maritime sculptures, each protruding from a watery grave.
