Proud guard at the TB clinic in Herat. He can visually detect who is more likely to have a TB diagnosis and asks them to jump the line. He claims he is seldom wrong. We called him the Chief.
Bibi Gol is deaf on both ears. She indicated through beatings from men. She strains to understand what is going on around her. She is always in a panic, as she is always catching up with what gets decided and is unfolding around her. She was diagnosed a year ago with TB. This is her third visit to the clinic.
A refugee from Farah, this woman has seen her share of life. Yet she holds on to her share of magic. It is how she survived TB. Especially traveling back and forth between Pakistan and Afghanistan to avoid the conflict. Her sun takes good care of her. Because of their constant movement, she has seen many doctors how have prescribed many different medications. This illustrates the problem of TB in Afghanistan. Due to population movements, many patients do not stay with one doctor and one regiment. Many relapse into TB, and thus need stronger and more expensive medications.
We are not sure Maryam survived the night. Her 17 year old husband brought her in. The next day she disappeared. Many TB patients are not aware that they do not have to die from TB if treated properly.
