This drawing of my mother and her best friend, Maia, was meant as a gift for Maia for her birthday. When they were growing up, my mother and her best friend were often mistaken for sisters. They are both strong women, but they draw their strength from very different sources. It is my mother, in the center, who is contemplative in the chaos of her high school graduation, and Aunt Maia, on the right, who is simply happy. I wonder what they thought their future held at that moment. Their late friend Fira, on left, is the most excited, bubbly one - could she have know that her life would be full of challenges and misfortunes? Read Less
