After a harsh confrontation between police and the army against a gang of drug dealers, the security forces in Brazil have managed to gain control of the favela of Vila Cruzeiro, one of the most dangerous of Rio de Janeiro. The operation lasted six days.
The operation began with a wave of violent attacks by drug traffickers in the favela Vila Cruzeiro. The criminals were spent raiding and burning vehicles throughout the city of Rio de Janeiro. At first the operation was led by police with the assistance of the army, which provided six armored vehicles with weapons of war, in an organized attack to 15 favelas.
Police managed to capture all the conflict zones, forcing them to flee from drug traffickers, including the Vila Cruzeiro slum in northern Rio de Janeiro, famous for being the home of the Commando Vermelho dangerous gang, the Red Command. So far the balance of the transaction amounts to 30 dead and nearly 200 arrested, although these figures may increase.
Currently the city of Rio de Janeiro resembles a theater of war, is taken by the army and is not uncommon to see tanks patrolling the streets. This is certainly a blow to organized crime in Rio de Janeiro, with intent to make the city as safe as possible, remember that Rio de Janeiro will be a co-host World Cup in Brazil in 2014, and will welcome the Games Olympics in 2016.
