I used water-based graphite pencils and a minimalist approach to capture James McAvoy. Here, McAvoy channels powerful contemplation as he is posed on the brink of a decision. I capture his internal processes. I begin by using multiple photographs of McAvoy. From thesephotographs, I construct a view and draw freehand, until I have a compositedrawing. I then leave the drawing alone for a week to allow it to settle in myvisual memory. As I continue to draw, paradoxically, the more attention I spend on his likeness, the more McAvoy takes on the emotion I want to appear, where his aloofness does not mean passivity. Read Less
