My concept started from the idea of a shadowbox, in memory of the main character and narrator, Susie Salmon, who dies within the first chapter of the book. That idea was taken to final with how I framed the composition, dividing it into three parts. Her head would be Susie in the “in between”, where she watches over her family the years after her death.
The middle section is the cornfield, where she was raped and murdered.
And the last section is dirt showing underground where she died and where part of her elbow was found by a dog.
Alice Sebold’s novel is absolutely beautiful, I would highly recommend it.
