This piece, a commissioned work, continues my theme of story telling with minimal composition and subject matter. Although the work is essentially made up of two components, there is a story in the discarded weather balloon box and helium tank, as if the dog is making an escape for a better life. In addition, the string between the dog and the balloon has been tied with a bow. This was a conscious decision to give the dog human characteristics in order that the viewer may imagine the dog tying the bow herself, adding to the story of the picture.
A final feature is the paper on which the illustration was composed upon. Dating back to the 1950’s, this Italian artist’s watercolour paper was sauced from a disused illustrator’s studio near Salzburg, Austria. The discolouration and ‘spots’ on the paper give the work a quality that is more commonly synthesised in photoshop as an after thought. Read Less
