Help! The Illustrated Beatles.
Published:

In October 2012, I organised and curated 'The Illustrated Beatles' an exhibition that showcased the work of 42 illustrators. Each piece examined a song title by the legendary band, The Beatles.
My own contribution to the show was the song 'Help!'
After researching the song I learned of John Lennon's sudden fear and anixety of the overnight success the band had achieved and his inner turmoil and reluctance to continue to lose his personal identity. "My independence seems to vanish in the haze."
I chose to work in a sombre monochrome palette and purposely avoided drawing the Beatles themselves. Instead, I wanted to reinforce Lennon's feelings of being packaged by representing them through their iconic clothing and boots. Paul, George and Ringo stand to the left, each visually 'connected' as a unit while John remains the isolated figure exiting frame right. He walks away barefoot over shards which contain the song title, his boots removed (reinforcing his mental detachment from the goup). Each member stands on water representing the excessive adulation they now endure and the core of the songs lament.

To date the exhibition has shown in five galleries and has been the subject of continious press articles and radio shows.

Help!

Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney

Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone, help.

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody's help in any way.
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured,
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors.

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me.

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways,
My independence seems to vanish in the haze.
But every now and then I feel so insecure,
I know that I just need you like I've never done before.

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me.

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody's help in any way.
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured,
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors.

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me.
