This was a fun illustration done for the Tarsus Group's "Label Expo 2013". The biggest challenge was figuring out how to incorporate a large number of specific objects within a single illustration. I decided this would be a great piece to show some of my process and to let you know - it doesn't always go smoothly!
When I received the brief, I instantly had a solution to the challenge, which I sketched up as option 1. There were a number of specific objects (each which represented something important to the client) that needed to be prominent in the illustration. I included options 2 and 3 as alternatives.
The client decided that options 2 and 3 fell closer to the end result they were looking for, but I still wasn't satisfied with the layout I'd developed. This led to my next sketch:
While the sketch managed to bring all the elements together, the pose of the magician still felt off to me. I decided to take a break from the computer (where I do all my work), changed my environment, and grabbed a sketchpad to see if I could hammer out a solution.
The sketch below is what I came up with and as you can see in comparison to the final, it landed just right.
