BACKGROUND: In China, thousands of people are executed each year. It is difficult to find exact numbers on this matter, because China treats executions like a state secret in order to avoid international sanctions. This means that every day people are being killed right before the world’s eyes – but in secrecy. IDEA: With mobile displays at public places we open peoples’ eyes. The little stage on top of the display looks totally empty at first glance – a 1-Euro-donation reveals the scene: an execution just like it happens on a daily basis in China. The donation serves two goals – it raises awareness of the actual situation and helps Amnesty International take action against the Chinese obscuring policy. TECHNIQUE: We used a worldwide unique black pigment that specially had been developed for our cause. It absorbs almost 100% light and thereby obscures the model execution to the human eye.
