The sulfur miners on the Ijen volcano work under inhumane conditions. Most of them do not live beyond 50 years of age. The Ijen volcano is hell on earth. However, it offers refuge to misfits of Indonesian society. Because employment is sparse in Java, those in charge are convinced of the social value of the project. The fact is: sulfur is a waste product of the oil refining process and can be bought very cheaply anywhere in the world. But the hard labour of the sulfur miners is worth even less. Read Less
