"The Robert Frank Project" is an ambitious long term publishing programme which encompasses Robert Frank’s complete oeuvre - reprints of his classic books, reprints of some rare small books, the publication of previously unseen projects, newly conceived book works, and his "Complete Film Works" in specially designed collector’s DVD box. This ensures the legacy of this original and seminal artist and that Robert Frank’s work will be available and accessible for many years to come in a scheme and to a standard that the artist himself has overseen. The publication of a new edition of “The Americans” on May 15th, 2008, the fiftieth anniversary of the first edition, was the pike of "The Robert Frank Project". It presaged a major touring exhibition and accompanying catalogue from the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., “Looking In: Robert Frank’s The Americans”, which opened in January 2009. Robert Frank discussed with publisher, Gerhard Steidl, the idea of producing a new version using modern scanning and the finest tritone printing. The starting point was to bring the original prints to Göttingen, Germany, where Steidl is based, from New York. In July, 2007, Frank visited Göttingen. A new format for the book was worked out and new typography selected. A new cover was designed and Frank personally chose the book cloth, foil for embossing and the endpaper. Most significantly, in the process of working out the layout of the photographs on the page, Frank chose to reproduce un-cropped examples of the photographs when available. Two images were changed completely from the original 1958 and 1959 editions. Then, on a sunny day in July of 2007, the presses started rolling and Robert Frank personally supervised the printing of this latest edition of "The Americans". The brochures contain details of all the books and films which are currently available and those planned for the future. I worked on the Art Direction and Editorial Management of the project, together with Robert Frank, Gerhard Steidl, Ute Eskildsen and film editor advisor Laura Israel. This project was scanned, designed, produced and printed in-house at Steidl Verlag in Göttingen, Germany. Read Less
