Wake Forest University Fall 2009 Mainstage Production of "Sonnets for an Old Century" by José Rivera, directed by Cindy Gendrich & Christina Tsoules-Soriano. This was my 1st performance ever in a WFU Mainstage prod. I was part of the Ensemble, or what we all referred to as "The Already Dead." Collectively, the members of the Ensemble were dwellers of the afterlife who were there to welcome & offer community to "The Freshly Dead" as they make their transition out of the world of the living, and into a more ethereal place. A space where they are given the opportunity to speak their thoughts & feelings out to the universe one last time. We all were present onstage for the entire run-time of the show. I'll never forget - my 2 spoken lines of dialogue near the tail-end of the play were 1. The first time you get the dog to shit outside. 2. The first time therapy makes sense. Both are moments of discovery, moments of joy, moments of relief where one can simply and actually breath for the first time in a long time, it's not about finding happiness so much as learning peace.
