Korea's first department store opened in Seoul in 1930. Shinsegae took over the site in 1963. RYA Design Consultancy was asked to redefine the space as a world-class luxury shopping destination. The historic building was designed as a gallery where the merchandise is the art. The seven floors are connected by a historical staircase which forms the centerpiece of the design. The design challenges of the space were the limitations imposed by the existing historic structure. Columns in the basement level were as much as 2 meters wide, while ceilings on the fourth level were less than 2.5 meters (8 feet). Adjustments were required at every turn as site conditions frequently did not match the existing drawings. Ultimately, we delivered on creating one of the world's most beautiful department stores.
