Rural Post-Industrial

The Rural Post-Industrial workshop challenged me into conceptually creating something out of an abandoned, exploited site.

The idea of a convention center was very intriguing in that it brought modern society into the rural post-industrial.

If one can have a wedding at a farm, why not at a quarry?
Site sketch of the geometrical composition made up of abandoned quarry stone diggins.
Re-Utilization of an abandoned digging hole into a more spiritual space. Here, the sketches suggest a speaker of some sort (religious, motivational, etc) before a "crowd" of spectators. The position of the stones were left as is and utilized as audience seating.
Conceptual sketch. I was curious with the possible outcome of sculpting the stone blocks into perfect spheres to call to mind the dangers a quarry posed. The sculpted spheres would have to remain intact or they could come tumbling down, recalling the precautions taken by quarry workers.
Conceptual sketch of a 3D grid that could serve to project movies or presentations to a crowd around the site. Inspired by the openness of the digging hole.
Going against my "perfect sphere" idea, I wanted to make the remaining stone blocks into "pure prisms." So this would call for a detailed and geometrical work toward a perfect rectangle repeated all throughout the space into the depths of the water hole.

I want the user to be intrigued by the "perfectness of 'nature'"
Inspired by the great acoustics of the space, and the selfish desire to walk on water, I dreamed up this great event space. The platform would be made of very thick architectural glass to allow users to see beneath them. In this sketch, the base is supported by steel cables.
A reiteration of the above. This sketch has a floating base but is still transparent. A grid above would serve to hoist lighting fixtures and/or decorations.

The choice of materials such as glass and steel take into mind the "natural" site. The design attempts to be one with the site, instead of juxtaposing. So by keeping things transparent, steel, and black, one can closely achieve the design's goal.
