A Stormy Love Story
In which a lost robot meets a helpful squid & they fall in love.
This short film is a personal project which was primarily used to give my interns something to practice on as I taught them (& myself) story telling fundamentals. It took me a year to do this on & off with different sets of students. At one point I had to hire (friendly) freelancers to help me finish it. I would love to be able to do more things like this : )

Initial character designs
This was our first storyboard when we had not settled on the final look of the characters yet.
Polishing our character designs.
Studies of our skies & waves.
Environment designs.
This was when we were figuring out if we were to go for a clean or a textured look.
When the character & enviroment designs were set, we no longer needed a clean looking board. What was important was that we figured out the framing & character movements quickly.
Animatic frames. We stayed at this stage the longest.
This is the original script when we still reffered to Pugita the squid as Octogirl.
SEQUENCE 1 EXT. SEA
A ship drifts aimlessly on theocean.
SEQUENCE 2 INT. CAPTAIN’SCABIN, ROBOT’S SHIP
The cabin looksunmaintained and almost-empty. ROBOT sits on a chair, watching a band perform asong on a beach. On a desk nearby lies a broken compass, a map with drawnarrows pointing to different directions, and a picture of his home. He staresblankly at the TV when the latter suddenly breaks down.
SEQUENCE 3 EXT. SHIP’SDECK
Robot enters theship's deck. He brings out a telescope and starts trying to search for land.His telescope passes by a beautiful sea creature. He sees OCTOGIRL. Octogirlcomes near to the ship and introduces herself. Robot also introduces himselfand explains that he’s been lost for days;that his compass is broken; and that has no idea how to return to land.
After listening, Octogirlgestures for Robot to wait a minute. She dives into the ocean.
Robot frowns.
SEQUENCE 4 EXT. UNDER THESEA
Octogirl goes deepinto the ocean until she reaches a shipwreck. She finds a way in. After asecond she exits the shipwreck and swims back to surface.
SEQUENCE 5 EXT. SURFACE, SHIP’S DECK
Octogirl offers Robota classic compass.
Robot’s face lightsup. He takes the compass—hugs Octogirl for a second—and runs to the captain’scabin.
SEQUENCE 6A INT. ROBOT’S HOME, LAND
Door opens and Robotappears, his face occupied by a wide smile. He observes the place. The wholehouse looks dark and deserted. He starts cleaning up and does some chores.
SEQUENCE 6B INT. LIVING ROOM, ROBOT’S HOME
He rests,sitting in front of a TV. His classic compass falls from his body, he picks it up and remembers Octogirl.
SEQUENCE 7 EXT. SHIP’S DECK, SEA
He sails back in tothe middle of the ocean & calls out to Octo Girl. She comes out, gets onboard & hugs Robot.
SEQUENCE 8 MONTAGE
Robot and Octogirl happilyclean the captain’s cabin.
They watch some show on thenewly-fixed small TV
Night time. Robot andOctogirl lying on deck, watching the stars.
Octogirl falls asleep.Beside Robot. Robot stares at her.
SEQUENCE 9A EXT. SHIP’S DECK
Robot & Octogirlare on the deck again, leaning on the railings while observing the sea’s peace.Robot gets Octogirl’s attention. He gives her the classic compass back andtells her that he doesn’t need it anymore.
Suddenly, a giant seadevil emerges from the ocean, his minions incapacitates Robot & he becomes unconscious.They drag Octo girl in to the ocean.
SEQUENCE 9B EXT. SHIP’S DECK
Robot reboots. Wakesup. Shocked, remembering what had happened, he jumps in to the deep ocean.
SEQUENCE 10 EXT. UNDER THE SEA
He searches for OctoGirl. Asks fishes and other sea animals of where the seadevil hides. Nights & days pass. He finds Octogirl’scompass(?) just in front of a cave. He enters the cave and encounters theminions of the sea devil. He fights them off and continues deeper into thecave.
SEQUENCE 11 INT. SEA DEVIL’S HIDEOUT
Robot finds Octogirl trapped, captive by thesea devil.
He fight the seadevil, defeats him and frees Octogirl. The swim back to the surface and go backto Robot’s ship deck.
SEQUENCE 12 EXT. SURFACE TO SHIP DECK
The Sun shines. Bothare happy. But then Robot starts to rust. He soon breaks down and dies.
