The National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs (NAAMLP) asked us to design a booklet that, on the eve of their 30th anniversary, celebrated recent successes in its member states' projects. We grouped the projects into three categories: Reclamation, Restoration, and Safeguarding—the three main areas that NAAMLP member organizations work in—and had them write summaries of projects with images to match.
The main challenge with this project was treating each project equally, from a visual standpoint; each member organization does important work, and in a publication that celebrates all member organizations' efforts, this was crucial. We created a modular grid that mandated set placement for each piece, giving equal visual weight to each project. The main challenge was editing content to fit, but in the end it worked perfectly.
