Random New York City Facts is a fun little illustration series I completed during the Christmas 2012 break. It was inspired by a 2 month trip to New York City I took in early 2012 where I kept an illustration travel diary of all my favourite places. APPROACH The illustrations are all hand-drawn with marker pen, and then scanned in, vectorised and coloured. Each card is a standard postcard size, but design wise they are so far removed from the typical look of a tourist postcard you can find in so many New York City shops. I aimed to take quite iconic places and interpret them in a lo-fi, fun and colourful way. Each postcard as their own individual random fact, because New York City has such an rich history which makes for some interesting and often quirky facts. Some facts include: "Times Square was nicknames ‘The Tenderloin’ because it was supposedly the most desirable location in Manhattan in the 1920s." and "On May 30, 1883, a rumor that the Brooklyn Bridge was going to collapse caused a stampede, which killed at least twelve people" SCOPE 28 locations were illustrated and printed on beautiful Stonehenge watercolour paper.
