Play by Play Typeface
Custom lettering drawn by George Bates, brought to life for everyday use by Nickelodeon.
Play by Play was originally conjured up by veteran illustrator George Bates for a Nickelodeon Studios promotion. The work was so beloved, Nickelodeon wanted George's work translated into a working typeface to be used for other materials.

Alongside George, I took his hand-rendered letters and only with slight modification coaxed them into a typeface that preserves the nuanced imperfections and the slightly jumpy baseline. With two versions of each letter to be used in short bursts for headlines and one-liners, Nickelodeon was thrilled with the results.
