Shoe for Circus Performers
Published:
Part of 2-week workshop at Pensole Footwear Academy
My project was to design a shoe for circus performers.
Price Point: $65

I decided to narrow my focus to the acrobatic and gymnastic performers, who perform feet intensive maneuvers. Talking to a few circus performers in Portland and watching a ton of Cirque Du Soleil videos, I chose to go with developing footwear that focuses on the training aspect of circus performers.

A circus performer in the Cirque Du Soleil touring troupe trains 12 hours per week on top of the 270 to 310 shows performed per year. With such an intensive year round routine, their feet and ankles become susceptible to fatigue and overuse injuries as they practice and perform the same maneuvers over and over again.

Ideation was focused on 3 aspects: support, cushioning and protection.

Creating the shoe’s pattern using tape and testing out the fit.
The final design was a simple and minimal compressive sleeve that the allows natural movement and a tactile feel of the ground while providing support and cushioning.
