I was recently invited to spend two days sketching in these fascinating workshops. One of the parts I enjoy most about being in garages is getting to watch fantastically highly skilled people at work - and there was plenty to see here. New Forest Classic Cars mainly restore E-type Jaguars. Restoration isn't really the right word though. They actually hand-build the cars, from the ground up, with much more precision and care than when they were first built. The original E-type was such a huge success that the factory struggled to make them fast enough. They were built in a hurry - sometimes the body panels weren't even stamped the right number of times! "Nothing fits", was a phrase I heard over and over again from the craftsmen. Their patience pays off though and it's a real treat to see a freshly built E-type with a level of finish that the beautiful design deserves. Enlargements of the finished sketches will be used to decorate the walls of the premises. Read Less
