North East New Territories, Hong Kong When was your last time walking on a large green natural space? In this commercial and highly developed world, people are getting richer. Without worrying about living, they start to consider how to live in a better way. In an attempt to improve quality of life, luxury goods and technology products are consumed voraciously. Ultimately, however, what is craved in the name of “progress” and “simplification” destroys future quality of life by wasting natural resources and harming the environment. Upper class customers continue building a materialistic and technological society. Their ambitious actions and lack of concern in sustainability destroy nature as well as grassroot hometowns in the countryside. What should be the core of living? When you see how simple the life of people who live and farm in the North East New Territories can be, you will know how ridiculous our life has become. I experienced their simple lifestyle yet their smiles speak hopelessness and frustrations, perhaps because they know that simplicity will soon be gone and forgotten. We do not have the power to control or stop urban development, so I choose to document the undeveloped areas. Instead of arguing over further development, why don’t we cherish everything we have now?
