Maple Sugar is a project aiming to explore materialities of maple trees. I aimed to recreate the maple sugar cube with a very distinct Native American theme. The sugar cubes are made from 100% pure canadian maple syrup. They are then boiled to a specific temperature and cooled for a specific period. The cubes are made as a sweetener for foods or coffee & tea. They can also be consumed as a small sugary treat! Packaging was an essential part of my concept where I drew inspiration from the construction and simplistic design of the common cigarette box. But I did not see any consistancy in my design narrative if I used a replicated cigarette box. Therefore I researched into Native American Foods, Packages and even Housing. I soon discovered the Teepee. The Teepee fits perfectly with my maple sugar cube as it was triangular in shape. I then looked into small branding and printing on my packaging and rested on a small Native American pattern to fit around the bottom of three sides of my box, where a large maple leaf filled the fourth and front side of the packaging. I believe this helps identify the product and keep a consistent reference throughout the product back to my design narrative of a Native American recreation of maple sugar. My maple sugar cube packaging is also made from partial maple paper. I also wrapped my maple sugar cubes in baking paper for preservation. In doing this the Teepee abstraction of my packaging will be continued as the baking paper will rise from the top of the packaging as to symbolise smoke and foundations coming from a real Teepee.
