The picture series Manmade Mutants is the outcome of examining the question of how Illustration works outside the books in a third dimension. The term freak originates from freak of nature referring to disabilities and illnesses. In the turn of the 20th century the habit was to present malformed and disfigured people in costumes on a circus stage as freaks. Nowadays the term freak is rather defined by standing out in a crowd and being different from the norm. The features of a freak of nature are not naturally grown anymore, but artificially made, which could result in crazy haircuts, piercings and tattoos to express individuality. The 6 characters are hybrids built by exaggerating the known characteristics of the 20th century freaks and stageing them in a modern enviroment. By aesthetisicing these naturally grown deformations – like tumours, polyps or hornifications – we tried to find the balance between fascination and disgust,compassion and schadenfreude, repulsion and attraction, aesthetic and tastelessness.
