A project that we are supposed to use only media based tools to produce a movie of maximum 2 minutes long based on a piece of literature given to us randomly by our tutor. My text was part of Jean Dominique Bauby's book called "Loaded for Duck". Jean Dominique Bauby was a French journalist, author and editor of the French magazine "ELLE", when on 8 December, 1995 at the age of 43 suffered a massive stroke. Twenty days later when he woke up he was diagnosed with a condition called "Locked-in Syndrome" which leaves you physically crippled. His brain was functioning and he was only able to move his eyes, that was his only way of communicating. Stuck inside his own body he dreamt of the nature in order to break out from his suffering. We had to respond to a given text, in my case it is Loaded for Duck. In this link you can also find my tumblr account where I recorded the process and research relative to this project.
Photographs taken on a walk through the forest where I decided to produce some photos that I could use for my short film. Throughout the day I was trying to get into Jean Dominique's position. I had to think, feel and see the way he would in order to depict these emotions and thoughts in my clip.
The following audio clip is sounds of birds, leaves and rain from the forest. I wanted to capture the essence of being in a forest and combine it with my visual content to produce a realistic image of Bauby's thoughts. This way I would be able to present the story and text like if we were watching it through his own eyes.
This photograph is an experimental outcome where I used a macro lens and shot through the holes I pinched on one of the photos I had taken and print on photographic paper. All I did was to pick up the camera put the photo in front of my lens and aim towards two windows located on the ceiling. The result is a distorted image of the roof windows which relates to Jean Dominique Bauby's blurry vision.
A few more photos taken using the same process and technique. These are taken straight out of the camere no editing was done.
The following track is by the very talented Brian Crain called "Imagination". When I first heard this song I knew it woud fit perfectly the content of my movie. Among other songs from The Cinematic Orchestra and him, I finally chose this song.
More photos taken in the forest and most of them were actually used as stills in the film.
Here is the final clip.
