Water Tight Cities

Promoting Water Bearing Green Infrastructure Retrofitting in Existing City Cores
Landscape Architecture (MA) Year 2: Self Negotiated Project

Research undertaken into the potential,  feasibility of, and issues involved in, the retro-fitting of water bearing green infrastructure within existing city environments led to the creation of a long term vision which strategically encourages and implements city wide improvements, including reducing flood risk, promotion of healthy lifestyles and creation of wildlife habitat.

One of the stages of the strategy is to use regeneration areas to showcase best practice in WSUD (Water Sensitive Urban Design), which will provide landowners with examples of how best to alter their property to cope with suggested policy change phasing which provide financial benefits or penalties depending on the efficiency of the property at dealing with stormwater on site.

The Leeds North East project is a high flood risk regeneration site in which a new park situated around the local beck course forms a centre piece and focus for the area....
Landscape No Longer Void
 Re-introducing Nature to a Re-created Danish Landscape
Landscape Architecture (MA) Year 2: Erasmus Exchange,
Vestkoven is an area located east of Copenhagen and has, in the past, like many natural areas within Denmark, been shaped by man's activities such as deforestation and mass land drainage in order to create arable farmland.

A conceptual competition brief requested that a new perspective for the Vestkoven area be created through the development of a creative and diverse environment which provides a better link to the city and people of Copenhagen. Within the focus area, the brief suggested that an inverted hill (void) be created at the base of an existing man-made land form, which could contain an activity hub of some sort.

To answer the brief a protective environment has been created within the void, into which species wiped out due to the activities of man which would normally thrive in the area, are able to be re-introduced and nurtured before gradually spreading back out into the surroundings. Links with the city have been created by incorporating exhibitions and art which emphasises how we all impact upon nature and demonstrate what can be done to repair the damage caused...

The Urban Boundary:
Competition Brief Creation
How does the transitional space between two areas influence it's surroundings?

Landscape Architecture (MA) Year 2: Erasmus Exchange,

Tivoli - an urban theme park located within the city centre of Copenhagen is protected and shaped by a distinct boundary. By creating a conceptual competition brief to explore the relationship and potential of the urban boundary, a new tool could be created to shape and influence peoples relationship with the environments on either side.

Site analysis maps and scale models were created of the site and conceptual inserts effectively demonstrated how existing boundaries and those from the past would effect the surroundings in order to promote creative ideas amongst entrants.

The brief would later be answered by individual students who produced designs which answered the questions posed.
Leeds City Park
Creating an escape from city life in an area of regeneration...
Plans for a new city park located on the site of Tetley's Brewery on Leeds' south bank creates an ideal opportunity to provide residents with an accessible escape from city life.

The master plan features various character areas which will appeal to all residents found throughout the city,  attracting people to the area who would not have visited it before. New residential blocks ensure a constant flush of people move through the area, travelling to and from the city centre, adding security and life to a new city district.

The Salem Rose Gardens provide an area of relaxation and contemplation as well as a haven for pollen collecting insects...
