D E S I G N     C O N C E P T
     This project aims to examine and propose an alternative plan for the Lakeside Development that is based on creating a more walkable community.  Using the site’s proximity to the METRA Electric Line, the design was focused on creating a Light Rail system that would loop around the site back to the METRA line.  Extending the water slip that currently exists was another main concept that drove the overall design.  Integrating a canal feature into the site was done to bring interesting outdoor spaces that could attract more residents and businesses. Minimizing car traffic was also key to making the site more walker friendly.  The city blocks were designed to spread diverse activities and amenities around the site.  The addition of the light rail gives the residents an alternative, more sustainable means of transportation.  The light rail path was designed as a linear park with market spaces at each train stop to help drive train riders.
 
    The development of the design derived by addressing the site in sections to further detail spaces, streets, and site conditions.  The four sections below are a set of detailed images that render proportions and scale.   In designing a more walkable city,  residential buildings are placed in a very dense manner along streets to support commercial and retail businesses.  Density helps support walkability and vice versa.  The city blocks were designed to create corridors like Michigan Ave.  In this case, it was important to keep the buildings within a four to eight story height to address the human scale.  Residential towers rise with setbacks to support even higher density but to still allow streets to maintain a humane schedule.  The same principles were applied to the canal concourse and the light rail linear park.
