Darrell Holbrook did two tours in Vietnam, he worked in the coal mines for twenty years, he's politically conservative and keeps a small gun concealed in his pocket at all times. He's in his 60's and is in such bad physical shape that he can barely hoist himself into his truck. As a peace-loving liberal from the East Coast, our partnership was laughable. Darrell's openness and his pure intentions of teaching me about his life and his community overpowered any possible discomfort I began my first day with. Darrell swept me up into a whirlwind tour of his life. He drove me around to every road or bridge named after his family, he bought me lunch at Hardee's and he introduced me to everyone he knew--the women at the post office, the guys who sell chicken feed, the cashier at the grocery store and the secretary at City Hall. We visited every cemetery in the area where he had family members buried and the large lake where he likes to take his family for cookouts. What was undeniable about Darrell, and what outweighed any differences that we had, was his love for the place he lived, his desire to help and care for everyone he met (myself included), and his unfaltering pride for everything he stood for.
