Fashion photography has always been regarded as being frivolous and the light-weight end of photography. Everyday we encounter a proliferation of fashion images in the magazine, most of those portrays glamour and ideal models in order to sell the clothes, seldom putting in any deeper meanings. Engaging the viewer aesthetically, grabbing attention to the products to convince the consumer is the most important function of the fashion image. Inspired by “Alienation” theme throughout Edward Hopper’s paintings and Gregory Crewdson’s photographs, my research uses an experimental approach to stage the photograph, taking control of every little visual clue in order to tell the stories of disconnection among people. Bringing cinematic lighting and research study of human gestures from people in solitude into play, I hope to deliver strong and powerful visual that is able to be a stand-alone picture, unlike normal quantity of the fashion photos.
