Invisible Structures

  • BACKGROUND:
"Graphic Design is dead! Long live graphic design!"
It has always been hard to begin describing what the practice of graphic design is, ask any graphic designer and you are bound to get answers that seem to describe what graphic design is but yet on second thought it misses out on other critical aspects of the practice. Rather than being a problem, that has always been the nature of the practice.
Graphic design as it is today, has its own history, vocabulary, methods and aspirations and these attributes of graphic design are still being redefined. It is no longer simply a profession, a service, a tool or a means to create desire. It still serves those roles but it has expanded beyond these.

    MY RESPONSE:
Graphic design has always been about putting form and content together to create rhythm. Our job as a graphic designer is akin to that of a music composer or an architect: we shape virtual space. Within the chaos of images and words, graphic designers have always attempted to search for a sense of systematic order, arranging and organizing things into place. We utilize grids, rows and columns.

Within each piece of graphic design, there is an interwoven system of structure within it. This project aims to reveal the structures and invisible order that we graphic designers impose on our designs. On another level, the project aims to inspire designers to look view their work more critically to achieve a sense of order.
