This is the thesis project I created as a part of my final year study in graphic design. In Transit is about the movement that we, as people, undertake to get to where we need to be in life. At the heart of In Transit, is a story of migration. However, it's not about the kind of migration that glorifies taking a plane to go and live in a foreign land. It's about the mental aspects of migration— Things that I found myself thinking when I first migrated to the United States, in 2009. And things that I found myself thinking when I was returning to Jamaica for the first time in 3 years, in August of 2012, to complete my final year of college. The idea for In Transit developed from a poem I had written the night before I returned to Jamaica. It goes: "Once more I'm in transit… Staring off into the familiar unknown. Life, is once again playing out at a thousand frames per second. Admittedly, I'm terrified. Way more terrified than my demeanor is able to display. I've never fought in a war, but I'd like to believe that this must be the feeling closest to the ones felt by soldiers before marching off. However, beneath this feeling, I'm unshakable. I'm in a refuge constructed without doubt. Life has led me back to this moment, infinitely more aware and prepared for what is to come next. Therein lies my faith. No longer am I uncertain of my direction, no longer am I uncertain of my questions and answers. This is it, this is what needs to be done. However, "what needs to be done" is never without it's sacrifices. I'm not old enough to latch unto contentment and I'm too wise to be trapped by convenience. So with that, I let go. Staring off into the familiar unknown… Marching back to old mountains left vacant throughout the years. Unsure if I'd every complete them. But here I am, once again. Reinvigorated and ready to put an end to this chapter. I am neither happy nor sad. This is just what needs to be done... And that will always trump the comforts of being happy or sad." Read Less
