Personal illustration on the theme of «Death & the Maiden» for an exhibition at Cosmo Gallery in Barcelona.
In Miquiliztli ihuan Ichpochtli
Celebrating the Mexican Day of the Dead («Día de muertos»), I created this artwork for the exhibition «Mexicanos vivientes» at Cosmo gallery, in Barcelona, Spain ( The execution is based on a profusely detailed graphite drawing plus digital colour over Japanese paper. Rather than rely on traditional «Mexicanesque» imagery, I preferred to work on a more universal, philosophical approach to Death, taking the classic theme of »Der Tod und Das Mädchen« –explored by Dürer, Cranach, Brueghel, Goya, Schubert and other masters— to create the illustration. Additionaly, the work features original Gothic calligraphy and lettering for the title in Nahuatl. I show here the complete work plus several details, to depict its extreme ornamental features that, besides giving this work many alternate meanings, configure a kind of personal, contemporary tribute to Rococo. Thanks to Quique Ollervides ( for his invitation to collaborate.
