Opening Reception: Sullivan Galleries - 33 S State St, Chicago IL 60601 Monday June 10, 2013 at 8:00 PM SET OFF, a design exploration off the beaten path, features final projects by emerging designers from four graduate design programs at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). The largest of five new SAIC exhibitions on view during NeoCon, North America's largest design exposition, SET OFF is online at saic.edu/setoff. Description: A hanging installation consisting of over one hundred laser cut mirrored and transparent acrylic coats Coats originated from a series of sketches drawn from observation at Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate sculpture located in Millennium Park The installation serves as a representation of a crowd’s role in defining a space ( in this case, a space specific to the City of Chicago) The filtering of a single aspect of each human, that being the coats, resembles an abstract study of the symbiotic relationship between the people who inhabit a space and the space itself What one sees: Extracted remnants of each passerby in front of Cloud Gate over an extended period (5 months) Choice of material: The reflections of the coats that appeared on the actual sculpture (during observation) are represented as organic, smaller shaped parts that hang slightly above the coats The transition from mirrored acrylic to transparent acrylic resembles the fading impressions of the people who have come and gone from one of Chicago’s renown landmarks – acts as an overarching symbol of time Read Less
