There is currently almost nothing to guide people who just recently moved to the US. The only way people can learn about things is through trial and error. This is why I created an informational guide for people who just moved to the United States. Hello USA! is meant to serve the function of a good friend that gives you advice and teaches you about the new culture. Since my audience is people who are not fluent in English, I had to make my guide interactive, compact and clear. The package of ten folders with cards covers cultural and everyday aspects of American life. Each folder includes two types of cards. The first type of cards has a hand-generated illustration and general information on the subject. The second card gives information you can use on-the-go. Each card is color-coded for convenience and is small enough to be carried in a purse or even your back pocket. The folders hold the cards together and are packaged in a box that can be easily stored on a shelf or coffee table. Phonetic icons, such as “Hurray!” are used as a fun and innovative way to describe various things in my package. Since sounds are universal, phonetic icons make the learning easier and more engaging. It is also important to mention that everything in the guide is translated into Russian that is chosen as a case-study language. The translation is given alongside English to make the information easier to understand. Moving to a new country is an exciting but challenging process. Hopefully, Hello USA! will help new immigrants adjust to the American culture and become more comfortable in the US.
