For What It's Worth
Copper
South Africa's first ever commercial mine, a copper mine in Springbok, was established in 1852. More mines opened soon after, as additional copper deposits were discovered in the surrounding area, as well as more far-flung regions of the country. By 2007 most of these mines had run their course, and many had been closed for decades. Using CGI, I’ve represented the total amount of copper extracted from each of these mines.

Blue Mine - 3,500 tonnes of copper
O'okiep Mine - 284,000 tonnes of copper

Nababeep Mine - 302,500 tonnes of copper

Tweefontein Mine - 38,500 tonnes of copper
Jubilee Mine - 6,500 tonnes of copper

Copperton Mine - 462,500 tonnes of copper, 934,500 tonnes of zinc, and 1,000 tonnes of silver
Palabora Mine - 4.1 million tonnes of copper
