Far Away (Lejos) 2011 Two-channel video installation TRT 15:00 Composed and designed by Sage Lewis Words by the National Children’s Chorus and Coro Diminuto Cinematography by Aleigh Lewis Far Away is a video installation about the relationship between the US and Cuba told from the perspective of the youngest generations from both nations. Two virtual children’s choirs, one from Los Angeles and the other from Havana, sing together from across the ocean. The work was designed by artist Sage Lewis who interviewed the National Children's Chorus (Los Angeles) and Coro Diminuto (Havana) about their thoughts on nationality and friendship. The children’s answers became the libretto that Lewis used to compose a ten-minute a cappella choral work. Both choirs were then filmed performing the bilingual song on their own beaches with the ocean in the background. In the gallery, their images are life-size projections onto hanging scrims that face each other. Depending on where the spectators are standing, the choirs can be seen and heard as one choir blended together or as two separate choirs. Only being able to encounter each other through technology and music, the children transcend the political, geographic, and communication barriers that have divided their cultures for over 50 years. Far Away was created through Center Theatre Group’s 2009 Sherwood Award celebrating innovation in the theatre. It was premiered as a live choral work at Santa Monica's Broad Stage and at Havana’s Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and Teatro Mella. It also debuted in the form of a gallery installation at MALDEF’s headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. The installation will exhibit at Inner-City Arts in January 2012. The Documentary

The many phases of creating this work of art reflect a transformation in two cultures' attempts to communicate and understand each other.  The fascinating collaboration has been filmed from its beginning and will culminate with the children meeting and performing together in Havana and Los Angeles in 2012.
