Streetscape design including pedestrian and roadway configuration, surface treatment, lighting, planting and furniture as part of East Village infrastructure improvements in Calgary, Alberta.
In collaboration with Stantec’s client, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, I began by developing a set of values which drove all design decisions. Developing values was a fundamental step, intended to unify a disparate community of homeless, seniors, and condo owners.
To address the Human Comfort Value, raised crossings, curb extensions, textured paving, bollards, and tactile strips give priority to the pedestrian. To address the Community Value, planters provide gardening space for the many residents who don’t have any, and seating opportunities at intersections where people naturally meet. To address the History Value, weathered steel and a river motif is wound through the pavement and furnishings, reflecting the importance of the river and industry.
