  • DANCE TYPOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
     
    SELF INITIATED PROJECT 2013

    This workshop is called Dance Typography and its aim is to connect the art of writing with the rest
    of our body, to bring us into a different relationship with type, typography and space. All this can be
    achieved by using authentic movement in relation to space, as well as by learning the correlations
    of the Alphabet (letters) to the different body-parts (organs). Through various exercises of improvisation
    the participants are to create their own typographic synthesis, by using their bodies as the main tool,
    their voices and the space around them.
     
    This was a workshop coordinated by Magdalena Papanikolopoulou. In the context of the university
    project, it was part of a series of workshops called “Typography Workshops”, which also contains
    Calligraphy and Graffiti workshops. 
     
    Inspired by the workshop results, a traditional watercolour style has been used for the various illustrations. However, a more modern approach towards typography has provided contrast, and a contemporary feel to
    the project as a whole.

    LOGOTYPE
     
    The design of the logo uses the letter "a" to dance.
     
    CORPORATE IDENTITY 

    A minimal approach highlighting typography in motion, using an optical illusion. When the business card or the letterhead is pulled out of a partly transparent and partly striped folder, it gives the impression that the letter “a” in the logo moves. The following video shows thw way this illussion works.

    PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL 
     
    To aid the promotion of the workshop, a paper bag containing a sketchbook and pencil, were specifically designed and distributed.

    BOOKMARK
     
    The bookmark has the shape of the letter “D”, representing the word “Dance”. This becomes more apparent through use, as when the bookmark is placed on the page of a book, the counter of the letter “D” appears.

    LEAFLET
     
    The double sided leaflet has the information on one side, and once completely unfolded, a poster on the other.

    TYPOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS BOOKS
     
    There are three books supporting the workshops, Dance Typography, Graffiti and Calligraphy. Each book has its own box in the shape of the first letter of the corresponding workshop, the letters “D”, “C”, and “G” respectively. The trilogy is placed in a transparent case.

    DANCE TYPOGRAPHY BOOK
     
    As mentioned above, the Dance Typography book is placed in a “D” shaped box. This book also comes with a separate flip book. The main book contains transparencies, giving a sense of motion to the illustrations.

    The book consists of 88 pages. Depicted are various spreads, and mainly those containing illustrations and transparencies. The red, blue, and green spreads with the quotes, work both as chapter separators and brief introductions for the next chapter in the book.

    FLIP BOOK 
     
    The flip book shows a dancing figure, creating one after the other the letters of the name of the workshop, 
    “DANCE TYPOGRAPHY”. There is a video of this flip book available below.
