This medal is devoted to all people who were persecuted, tortured and executed by the Communist regime for their political and moral attitudes. One of these “prisoners of conscience” was Miroslav Kácha, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 1949. When locked in a cell in the Pankrác prison, a sculpture of a dove in its nest he had made for himself from a piece of bread became a symbol of freedom to him. This dove is also the central motif of this commemorative medal. A replica of the original sculpture of a do-ve rests on a silver prism bearing, in its upper part, the text IN HONOUR OF THE PRISONERS OF CONSCIENCE AND TO THE ETERNAL SHAME OF THE NATION. On the front edge of the medal, the years 1948-1989 are engraved. The container in the shape of a cube is made from concrete and with its barred openings it suggests a prison – a cage. The project is given extra authenticity due to the fact that each of the dove sculptures has passed through the hands of Miroslav Kácha.
