COMMERCIAL ARTIST, NOT A NOTCH BELOW! Artists are the makers of the beautiful. They give form to human experiences, feelings and aesthetics. As such the better of the lot enjoy a place of privilege in the society. On the other hand, the hardnosed connoisseurs consider commercial art as kitsch and vulgar. It is business and business and art don’t go together, they argue. But in the contemporary consumerist society, mass arts capture the mass sentiments better. We see a ‘practical emotion’ in work on visual merchandise, hoardings, standees, backdrops, etc, hard selling a product or a service. Commercial art thus becomes a part of mass psyche, while pure art gets relegated to museums and galleries accessible only to few. A scholarly paper published in the US contends that commercial art shall one day be the single most uniting factor for mankind. Thus dismissing streetscape and commercial art is not justified and its importance in civilization’s progress can no longer be belied. Though for the commercial artists, it is rather a dismal situation, as they never get the name and fame enjoyed by pure artists. So, while they burn the midnight oil dabbling on canvas, let us cheer the unsung ‘creators.’ Read Less
