I created the journal Box Boy for Olivia's House, a non-profit in, York Pa. They are dedicated to helping children and their families coup with the loss of their loved one. This project was very close to my heart. Not because I have lost someone special to me but I tried to relate to these children with the memories of what I felt when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. The first image below is the cover of the journal. The cover represents what the child initially feels when confronted with this loss. The "box boy" on the cover represents all of the potential children that receive the journal. It is their journey. The "box boy" starts off scared and alone, black and white. Throughout the journal he regains his spirit and color through the prompts. Eventually the "box boy" reveals that this whole time that he was just a little boy that couldn't face the daunting reality of his loss and now came to terms with the situation. This hand-lettered journal is 13.5 in x 10.5 in.
