Since I love science fiction, I was glad to hear that The Great Books Foundation was putting together a collection, and I was going to illustrate the cover. My initial impulse was to do a fantastic and humorous homage to everything sci fi: aliens, space ships, domed cities... like a futuristic Bosch. It was a bit too busy, so I dialed it back. Then, when they affixed the title area to the illustration, the black sky was deemed too visually divisive.. so I redid the sky with a modernistic gradient. Very 50's kitch!
