The idea for this book was generated nearly three years ago after I had to call Mom for a favorite old recipe, which then had to be searched for in the little tin box where they’d been stored for 30 years. Then, once I got started looking through the box, the memories just kept coming.
Back in the 1970s, my dad began baking bread because he got tired of brown ‘n serve rolls for Thanksgiving dinner. Not only was the bread a hit at Thanksgiving but it became a popular treat at work. Co-workers began to ask him: “When are you gonna bring ‘Bernie Bread’ again?”
Over the years, we’ve had many “foodie” friends who have educated us, counselled us, and helped us compile more than 200 recipes. Some of their recipes are shared in this book along with the old family favorites. I love to use ingredients that are fresh and locally produced – a distinct benefit of living in the San Joaquin Valley. You’ll also find notes throughout the book sharing the tips and tricks which make these recipes unique to our family.
