This project is based on the infrastructure of Barcelona. I developed two typefaces based on the civic engineering of the city, one based on 18th and 19th century architecture, and the other based on the more modern trend the city is experiencing.
This was the first typeface I designed, using the cropped rectangle Barcelona employs as a standard city block as the basic reference for the letterforms. The most challenging part was reconciling this with letters that did not necessarily work well visually with the square basis.
This is the second typeface. My goal was to use the purest geometry that I could, in an attempt to emphasize the minimalistic forms present in the architecture.
Once I finished constructing the typefaces, I did a series of illustrations to portray the personality of both typefaces. The first two are based on the older section of the city, and I wanted to convey the colorful personality of the buildings.
The third illustration focuses on the more modern architecture in the city, emphasizing cleanliness, aesthetically pleasing curves and lines, and uniformity in design and color.
The final illustration shows both typefaces and their specific references in context, together.
