These boxes were created for an alumni gallery show I was a part of to support my old school. I'm a huge fan of tattoo culture, I love getting them and seeing the art on other people. Doing design work I'm constantly looking for great textures so I wanted to make that a featured element of some physical art.
I reclaimed so used bait boxes which was a nostalgic tie-in to the sailor idea of tattoos and further distressed them by setting them on fire and sanding them down to get color variations but allowing them to take the pigment better. I drew each design on the boxes and then used a woodburner to bring in the hard lines followed by creating an ink emulsion and painting it onto the designs.
