My book, From Azkaban to Zonko’s, is about an alternative alphabet I created from the Harry Potter series. Each letter is made from a material that represents a different place, object, or person from the books. My goal for this project was to create a book that had a Harry Potter feel, without being too obvious. For my format I chose a long vertical rectangle, to relate to the scrolls that witches and wizards use to write on. I also chose a tan colored stock to replicate a parchment feel. For my end pages I chose a maroon colored stock because it related to many of my images and it is also the color of Gryffindor, Harry’s house at Hogwarts. I modeled each letterform in the alphabet after the typeface Able, which is used in the Harry Potter chapter titles. Inside the book I used Garamond for the body copy because it is the typeface used in the body copy of Harry Potter books. I also used Quaver Sans as the typeface for my titles to create some contrast from the body copy. I hand traced these titles and scanned them in to have a more human-like feel and because everything was handwritten within the books, it relates more to my concept.
